TYPES OF BACK PAIN & REASONS YOUR BACK MAY BE HURTING

Cervical Spine (Neck)

Symptoms may include dull or sharp pain in the neck or between the shoulder blades that radiates down the arm to the hand or fingers, or numbness or tingling in the shoulder or arm. The pain may increase with certain positions or movements of the neck.

Thoracic (Middle and Upper) Back Pain

There are several reasons people may suffer from thoracic spinal pain. Muscle tension is among the most common causes and is often the result of poor posture.

In older adults, arthritis in the thoracic facet joints can cause middle and upper back pain, as can compression fractures of the vertebrae due to osteoporosis. In younger patients, a spine segment or a rib can be out of place and cause pain.

Other causes of middle and upper back pain include herniated or degenerated discs or problems with the joints that attach the ribs to the thoracic vertebra.

Lumbar (Lower) Back Pain

The lumbar spine, or low back, is a remarkably well-engineered structure of interconnecting bones, joints, nerves, ligaments, and muscles all working together to provide support, strength, and flexibility. However, this complex structure also leaves the low back susceptible to injury and pain.

The low back supports the weight of the upper body and provides mobility for everyday motions such as bending and twisting. Muscles in the low back are responsible for flexing and rotating the hips while walking, as well as supporting the spinal column.

Nerves in the low back supply sensation and power the muscles in the pelvis, legs, and feet.

Most acute low back pain results from injury to the muscles, ligaments, joints, or discs. The body also reacts to injury by mobilizing an inflammatory healing response. While inflammation sounds minor, it can cause severe pain.

Pelvic Pain

Can sometimes radiate to your lower back, butt or thighs. Sometimes, you might notice pelvic pain only at certain times, such as when you urinate or during sexual activity.

Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths in the uterus. They can cause pain throughout the pelvis and lower back. Fibroids can also cause rectal or bladder pressure and the feeling of needing to go to the bathroom more often.
